County Road 172 was rerouted around the hill in 1985, and access to the gate became problematic. Sometime thereafter, the empty house was sold and moved to Kingsland. We arrived knowing nothing about country life, and we made every possible mistake, but we happily grew vegetables and herbs and raised the chickens, geese, and rabbits that we learned to care for, process, and consume (almost) unsqueamishly. There are very large and clear no trespassing signs that threaten jail "or worse." But I experienced no problems at all, no threats and no real acknowledgement. It seems as long as you stay off the actual property and on the road they have no problem with you grabbing a few photos - at least that was my experience. It does look run-down like in the movies but its clear that people live there from the vehicles on the property. I'd get tired of having people just walk up to my house also. But, that being said, the house is quite beautiful in its own creepy way and worth the drive by if you're a fan of the movies.

There were three identical houses built in southern Round Rock at the beginning of the 20th century. All three of them were within walking distance of each other on or near Quick Hill. The TCM house is, of course, now a restaurant in Kingsland, Texas. Another house was down from the hill and is referred to as the “Burkland-Frisk” house, also called the sister house on my web site. It is not known what happened to the third house.

I also thought that no one was there because I didn't see and cars at first. I got some really neat pictures but I couldn't resist so I walked down the driveway to try to get as close as I could to the house. The interior of the Sawyers' home reflects their feral lifestyle and twisted take on "family values," and was decorated for the film with roadkill picked up on the side of hot Texas highways and scraps of meat sourced from a local slaughterhouse. It wasn't the most appetizing arrangement — by all accounts, the set smelled awful by the end of filming, with actors even vomiting out the window between takes. So, it's ironic that the same room is now the dining area of a restaurant.
Hooper's is part of a resort called the Antlers Inn, a former railroad inn that's since been converted into a complex with some unique accommodations like this red caboose where you can stay the night if you have a few too many at the Hooper's bar. The Gas Station also offers food and accommodations and is an additional two-hour drive to the southeast along Texas State Highway 71. So you could fit the Bagdad Cemetery, lunch at Hooper's, and dinner at the Gas Station into the same day and be back in Austin by late evening (just be sure to add time for Austin's often-terrible traffic). Or you could stretch the tour into a leisurely two-day trip, with an overnight stop in either Kingsland or Bastrop. The majority of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre takes place in and around a dilapidated rural farmhouse occupied by the Sawyer family, former slaughterhouse workers who turned to cannibalism after the local meat-packing plants closed.

So, if you're a fan, Hooper's is worth the visit to enjoy themed cocktails and even a juicy burger. It features replicas of the molds that were used to make the costumes and a spindle that was taken from the original house, as well as the original movie poster with autographs from all the actors, most of whom have passed.
